vastu Shasta-sgraffito-mandala wall art interior decoration utilising Clayworks clay plaster wall finishes
Traditional skills meet contemporary art with Clayworks Clay Plasters
All of the walls of this luxury villa in Presov, Slovakia are clay plastered, with Clayworks plasters applied by specialist artisan Eliska Turanska.
The villa is designed around the vastu shastra principle, and the stunning mandala was completed by Eliska using a specialist process called Sgraffito. The owners specified earthy, organic tones and natural soft colours throughout and Eliska explained why she chooses to work with Clayworks.
‘The basic clay plaster has a beautiful earthy dark brown colour and so I used sgraffito – the technique where the dark plaster appears in the scratched lines. The way that the unfired clay plasters sets means that they do not crumble and very sharp definitions are achieved. This way the design is full of fine details and reminds me of lace’. She added: ‘The combination of all of this together with the wonderful and specific white that Clayworks achieve, make this a very special result’.
Clayworks Clay Plasters were specifically innovated to lay down without dusting and the way that they set allows for very sharp and defined patterns to be achieved without crumbling and cracking, making them ideal for precision patterns and mixtures of textures. The most important value of the clients for this project is family and the slogan in the Mandala literally translates as: It is in god’s hands: protection of my children, protection of my family.
The project was completed in Clayworks smooth top coats in colours Dune and Buff.
