The Newt Somerset, Roman Villa Museum

Somerset, England

Stonewood Design’s RIBA award-winning Villa Ventorum and Museum offer a compelling window into Roman life in the Somerset countryside. Located within The Newt estate, the museum is positioned over the archaeological remains of the original Roman villa, first discovered in 1832.

Completed in 2022, the low-carbon building features a glazed elevation that opens up views across the landscape and towards the reconstructed villa beyond.

Inside, our natural clay plaster lines the walls, helping to regulate humidity and create a calm, breathable environment, ensuring that the original finds, including a Roman bath house, remain the centre of attention.
