The Old Vic Theatre

London

The Old Vic, one of London’s most iconic Grade II* listed theatres, has recently undergone a major front-of-house transformation led by Bennetts Associates and interior designer Rebecca Richwhite. The scheme has redefined the visitor experience by improving accessibility, expanding the foyer and box office, and creating a series of welcoming new bar and café spaces. The redesign carefully balances the building’s historic character with The Old Vic’s vision of creativity, excellence, sustainability and custodianship.

Bespoke Clayworks finishes sit within a layered material palette of leather, glass and tarnished bronze. A neutral-toned Tamped Earth finish adds texture to an appropriately grand arrival space and lobby bar, contrasting the oversized arched mirror. Meanwhile, the reconfigured bathrooms take inspiration from the auditorium’s plush red velvet seating, with a custom-coloured wine red Coarse Rustic finish that creates textural interest, contrasting with the glossy paint below.
