HRH The Duke of Gloucester Visits Clayworks to Champion Natural Building Materials

We were honoured to welcome His Royal Highness, The Duke of Gloucester, for an official visit to our headquarters on the Lizard Peninsula last month.

During his visit, The Duke toured the Clayworks workshop and met with members of our team to learn more about our work, upcoming projects, and the increasing importance of sustainable, natural materials in the construction industry.

A trained architect, His Royal Highness has held a corporate membership with the Royal Institute of British Architects since 1972. He serves as President of the Society of Architect Artists, is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, and a Commissioner of Historic England.

The Duke is also a committed patron of several organisations focused on architecture, heritage, and youth development within construction, including the Construction Youth Trust and the Architects Benevolent Society.

In recognition of his visit and support, The Duke unveiled a commemorative plaque, handcrafted for the occasion by local stonemason Richard Holliday.

Speaking about the visit, Adam Weismann, Founding Director of Clayworks, said:

“We were deeply honoured to welcome His Royal Highness to Clayworks. The Duke’s background in architecture and his ongoing commitment to traditional craft and sustainability resonate strongly with our values. This visit was an opportunity to share our passion for natural materials and to discuss the role they play in shaping a more sustainable future for the built environment.”

The Duke’s visit deepens our connection to the Royal Family’s work. In 2024, Clayworks was honoured with the first ever King’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainability. The King’s (formerly the Prince’s) Foundation has also been a great supporter, sponsoring Adam and Katy’s book, Clay & Lime Renders, Plasters & Paints and providing the pair with a scholarship to help fund research in North Africa, Europe and the USA.
